What is Voluntary Guardian?

The Voluntary Guardians of Kota Kinabalu Wetland Ramsar Site, KKWRS are committed volunteers who have been trained to manage the wetlands, for no financial reward.

The Vision and Objectives

We envisage a future in which the KKWRS enjoys on-going support and commitment of the community through the Voluntary Guardian who actively contribute to the objectives of the KKWRS.

The Voluntary Guardian Programme offers the community an opportunity to take an active role in supporting and promoting the care for natural heritage through the KKWRS educational programmes.

​

Voluntary Guardians can help to instill awareness, promote responsibility and care for the environment, help to conduct nature programmes, leaded guided tours, involve in wetland management and help to raise funds.

​

Voluntary Guardians, who will be recruited and trained, shall contribute their time to the management of KKWRS and all its programmes.

Criteria

  • Aged 13 years old and above

  • Able to contribute at least 10 days a year for voluntary work at KKWRS

  • Able to speak Bahasa Melayu or English

Areas of Involvement

  • Wetlands management

  • Environmental education

  • Fund raising

Training will be provided in these 3 areas

Discipline

Voluntary Guardians are expected to sign in and out in the volunteer attendance book. They have to inform the centre of their attendance before the commencement of their duties and if they are leaving early and before the end of their duties.

Voluntary Guardians are to observe a code of conduct:

  • To be punctual at all times

  • To be courteous towards the visitors

  • To observe the rules and regulation of KKWRS

  • To be properly attired

  • To inform the staff in advance if they are not able to turn up for their duties

  • Voluntary Guardians must not represent KKWRS or its management to the media or elsewhere, based on their volunteer status, unless approval has been given in writing
